Most teams have a spec format in somebody's head or in an old document that gets copied and slowly drifts. A template makes the format explicit: which fields exist, what they are called, in what order, and what a good entry looks like.
What a template is
In Wordspecs a template is a data file, not code. It lists:
- the fields (for example summary, requirements, success metrics, open questions),
- the label shown for each field,
- the order they appear in,
- an example value that shows what belongs there.
Because templates are data, adding one does not need a software change. Wordspecs starts with three: a SaaS product spec, a hardware datasheet and an API overview.
Saved templates
Saved templates are included in the paid plans. An agency can keep one format per client, a hardware startup can keep one datasheet layout for every product, and a product team can keep its own spec format, then start every new sheet from it.
Why this matters
The value of a fixed structure is that readers learn where to look. When every sheet has the same sections in the same order, review gets faster and gaps are easy to spot, because an empty field is visible.
